Date: circa 1900–1930
Early 20th century French devotional rosary with Miraculous Medal.
A beautifully timeworn French rosary composed of faceted white beads hand linked with darkened metal wire, bearing the unmistakable traces of decades of handling and prayer.
Its old metal crucifix carries Christ on the cross on one side and the words SOUVENIR DE LA MISSION on the reverse. Such crosses were devotional keepsakes connected with Catholic parish missions, periods of concentrated preaching, confession, prayer and spiritual renewal within local communities.
Beside the rosary’s centerpiece hangs an oversized Miraculous Medal, depicting the Virgin Mary with rays descending from her open hands and the invocation first associated with the apparitions to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris in 1830:
Ô Marie conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous.
O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.
Its reverse bears the traditional Marian monogram and cross, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, encircled by twelve stars.
The rosary has been left exactly as found. Oxidation, discoloration, wear and small irregularities remain visible, preserving the beautiful evidence of an object that was carried, held and prayed.
Materials
Faceted white glass or ceramic beads, hand linked base metal wire, pressed metal centerpiece and crucifix, silver tone Miraculous Medal.
