France, c. 1880–1920
A striking French altar crucifix featuring a rare skull and crossbones motif beneath the Crucified Christ.
The skull represents Golgotha, the “Place of the Skull,” where Christ was crucified. In Christian symbolism it also serves as a memento mori, a reminder of mortality and the promise of resurrection. These motifs were commonly found on older altar crucifixes and devotional objects intended for private prayer.
The crucifix itself is beautifully proportioned, with trefoil ends, an INRI cartouche, and traces of its original aged finish. The stepped circular base allows it to stand easily on an altar, bookshelf, or devotional table.
A contemplative object that carries both beauty and gravity, inviting reflection on impermanence, redemption, and the mystery of faith.
Condition
Good antique condition with age related wear, darkened patina, and surface marks consistent with devotional use. Stable and display ready.
