The Brown Madonna

€111.00

Origin: France

Date: circa 1900–1925

Materials

Faceted brown stone or stone like beads, brass tone metal chain, pressed metal Marian centerpiece and crucifix.

Early 20th century French devotional rosary, circa 1900–1925.

An evocative antique French rosary composed of hand faceted brown beads, each one subtly different in color and marking, moving through shades of walnut, chestnut, ochre and deep earth.

At its center is a small pressed metal image of the Virgin, darkened by time and framed within an ornamental quatrefoil form. Below, five additional beads descend toward an unusual layered crucifix, its simple figure of Christ set against a geometric, almost architectural cross.

There is something beautifully austere about this rosary. Unlike the bright silvered pilgrimage rosaries of Lourdes, its palette is entirely earthen: brown beads, aged brass, deepened patina. The metal has been left exactly as time has made it, retaining the wear and oxidation of an object once handled in prayer.

The individually faceted beads are especially lovely. Their irregularities and variations give the piece the feeling of something made to be held rather than displayed.

A quiet French devotional object from the early decades of the twentieth century, bearing the unmistakable traces of age, touch and prayer.
