Rome, Italy c 1900–1930
An exceptional early twentieth century pilgrim’s rosary from Rome, featuring deep chestnut brown beads and an uncommon opening reliquary crucifix.
Hidden within the crucifix is a small devotional chamber containing a relic labeled Terra Catacombe - earth gathered from the ancient Roman catacombs where generations of the earliest Christians worshipped, prayed, and buried their dead. Such relics were acquired by pilgrims as tangible reminders of the Church’s earliest foundations and carried home as treasured keepsakes of faith.
The beautifully engineered crucifix retains its original threaded closure, allowing the reliquary compartment to be opened while preserving its original contents. The rosary’s warm brown beads have acquired a rich patina through decades of prayer, making this a deeply evocative devotional object.
A remarkably uncommon pilgrimage rosary combining the quiet beauty of daily prayer with the enduring memory of the early Christian Church beneath Rome.
