The Dawn Rosary Keeper
Antique French Porcelain Vessel + Vintage French Rosary France, c. late 19th / early 20th century
A small vessel for the keeping of prayer.
This antique French porcelain piece began its life not in a chapel, but upon a dressing table or washstand. Originally created as a toothbrush holder, its pierced lid and removable basin belonged to the intimate rituals of the French toilette, holding the small implements of daily care.
More than a century later, it has been given another purpose.
Inside rests The Dawn Rosary, a vintage French rosary of luminous coral coloured glass beads joined by warm gilt metal, with a traditional Marian centre and beautifully faceted crucifix.
Together, the two pieces become a rosary keeper: a small altar vessel in which prayer beads can be gathered, protected and returned after use. Place it upon an altar, bedside table or private place of prayer, lifting its delicate porcelain lid whenever the beads are called into your hands.
I love that its original story is not erased by its transformation. This little porcelain vessel was created to hold the objects of an everyday ritual. Today, it does exactly the same.
Only the ritual has changed.
The porcelain bears the beautiful evidence of its age, with timeworn gilded floral decoration, small marks and the soft patina of generations of use. The rosary carries its own gentle patina and warmth.
A one of a kind pairing of two vintage French objects, brought together for a new life of devotion.
