The Pilgrim of Lourdes

€145.00

Origin: Lourdes, France

A Catholic pilgrimage souvenir or devotional rosary associated with the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Date: circa 1920–1940

Materials

Brown banded agate or agate type stone beads, silver tone base metal links, Marian centerpiece and cast metal crucifix.

Early 20th century French pilgrimage rosary, Lourdes, France.

A beautiful old French rosary believed to date to the early decades of the twentieth century, composed of polished elongated beads in shades of honey, amber, caramel and deep brown. Their subtle banding and individual variations give the rosary an earthy, almost luminous quality.

At its heart is an octagonal Marian centerpiece framed with roses, leading to an unusually detailed crucifix. Christ appears at its center surrounded by small devotional scenes worked into the terminals of the cross. Turned over, the crucifix bears one simple inscription: Lourdes.

The name anchors the rosary to one of the great Marian pilgrimage sites of France, where pilgrims have traveled since the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.

The rosary shows the beautiful evidence of age and devotional use. The metal has softened and darkened with time, while the polished beads retain their warm glow. One bead is noticeably paler than the others, an irregularity that only adds to the sense of a rosary with a life and history of its own.

An intimate object of pilgrimage, prayer and remembrance, carried home from Lourdes long ago.
