The Pilgrim’s Journey
France, c. 1940–1960
A beautiful mid century French pilgrimage rosary whose devotional charms tell the story of a life shaped by sacred journeys.
This vintage rosary is composed of luminous ruby red faceted glass beads linked by silver tone chain that has acquired a soft, time worn patina. At its heart is an expressive Sacred Heart centerpiece crowned with thorns and marked IHS, leading to a classic silver tone crucifix.
What makes this rosary truly exceptional is its collection of original pilgrimage souvenirs gathered over time. Alongside the crucifix hangs an engraved cross reading Souvenir de Notre Dame de Lourdes, a devotional medal depicting the Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes on one side and the crowned Virgin on the other, and an additional charm engraved Souvenir de Verdelais, commemorating the historic Marian sanctuary near Bordeaux.
Rather than remaining a simple rosary, this piece became a personal record of pilgrimage. Each medal was likely added following a visit to one of France’s beloved shrines, transforming the rosary into a deeply personal testament of faith, prayer, healing, and remembrance.
Today it stands as both a devotional object and a remarkable piece of French pilgrimage history.

Curator’s Note
Some rosaries accompany daily prayer.
Others accompany a lifetime of pilgrimage.
This rosary bears the memory of at least two of France’s most beloved Marian sanctuaries: Lourdes, where millions have sought healing and hope, and Verdelais, a centuries old place of devotion in southwestern France. Its collection of pilgrimage medals suggests they were gathered over years of travel, each one marking a sacred destination, a prayer offered, or a grace received.
Rather than altering these additions, they have been lovingly preserved as part of the rosary’s own story. Together they transform this object into something far more than a devotional aid. It is a tangible record of one pilgrim’s spiritual journey, now ready to accompany another.
