A beautifully preserved French portable devotional shrine honoring Our Lady of Lourdes, crafted during the great revival of Marian pilgrimage that followed the apparitions at Lourdes in 1858.
The silvered metal case opens like a tiny chapel, revealing an intimate sanctuary lined with its original black velvet. Resting within is a finely cast miniature figure of the Virgin Mary, standing in quiet prayer upon the rocky grotto. Opposite her appears the crowned ND monogram, an elegant emblem for Notre-Dame, delicately mounted against the velvet lining.
The exterior is richly ornamented with Gothic Revival scrollwork, flowers, and openwork tracery, transforming this small devotional object into a work of miniature ecclesiastical architecture.
Designed to be carried close to the heart, these portable shrines accompanied pilgrims on journeys, soldiers during times of uncertainty, and families who wished to keep a sacred presence near wherever life led them.
Today it remains both a rare devotional object and a beautiful reminder that sanctuary can exist within the smallest of spaces.
